Setting up Zoho Mail for your domain when using Netlify

As part of the transition between idea validation and actually building reciprocal.dev into an actual product we found ourselves needing to set up an email address.

I’d bought the original domain from Hover when I had the idea and then used Netlify some months later to publish the website and prototype used in the idea validation stage. I hadn’t given much thought to actually using the domain for business related things like email.

Deciding which email host to use

As I bought the domain from Hover I looked into their offering which wasn’t free (it’s $20 a year per email or $5 for forwarding) and while my co-founder had an Office 365 subscription it wasn’t the right tier to use for email over a custom domain.

Luckily after a bit of searching I found that Zoho offer free email hosting on a custom domain for up to 5 email addresses and they also offer alias without eating into that 5 address limit.

This meant we could have a company email address each and a team one with aliases for other means, such as support, and all for free!

Zoho also offer a bunch of free tooling in this offer that might be of use for startups such as social media tools and CRM, although I’ve not used these enough to give an opinion…
